KOREAN SKINCARE DUPES FOR HIGH END FAVOURITES #2

$

I hinted at a second wave of dupes in Part 1 of my Korean Skincare Dupes, and today it's finally here! I'm really excited to share this post, as finding dupes in makeup and skincare is one of my most favourite past times, and the bunch I have today feel like a pretty good group. So for Kbeauty dupes of some high end, cult favourites, including quite a few that I think are actually better than their pricier counterpart, keep on reading!

The Darphin Hydraskin Serum (£43 for 30ml, here for the US) is a hydrating serum that doesn't seem to attract much hype, but has been an old favourite of mine nonetheless, delivering instant hydration to thirsty skin. A lightweight, watery consistency sinks in immediately and provides a first layer of hydration - great for layering with other products at night or using alone in the day. The water base is accompanied by glycerin, pomegranate, hyaluronic acid and botanical extracts. The Triplus Hydrating Ampoule from The Saem (£16 for 30ml, here for the US) comes in an almost identical glass bottle and has the same function, although the ingredients and formula differ. Rather than water, this serum has a base of galactomyces ferment filtrate (the perceived magical stuff in SKII's Facial Treatment Essence) as well as squalane, glacial water and sodium hyaluronate to hydrate the skin. The dual-phase formula also contains fermented olive oil and soybean flour to deeply penetrate and hydrate the skin - so this serum feels closer to a light oil than the Darphin. Both however, feel light, layer well and leave the skin feeling hydrated.

Many of us have tried and loved the Fresh Rose Mask ($62 for 100ml, here for the US) but it's not an inexpensive product. A super hydrating, jelly-like mask suspends rose petals to soothe skin, calm inflammation and relax and refresh. Notable ingredients include rose water, rosehip oil, jojoba, green tea, cucumber and aloe. Having a look at the ingredients on the Fresh website though, this mask apparently has not one but five parabens??? I would really expect a little better quality for the price this commands. Fortunately, this style of mask isn't uncommon, which is where Dal Tokki's Rose Mask ($12 for 75ml) enters the stand. Again, extremely similar packaging, and the product itself looks very similar in colour and texture. A similar set of ingredients, including rose extract, rose water, rosehip oil, green tea, calendula, jojoba, daisy and sodium hyaluronate, this mask doesn't smell quite as rosy but is paraben free. I have not one but two dupes for the Fresh mask today, the second of which is Dearpacker's Black Tea & Rose Mask ($27 for 100ml), the same idea, colour and gel consistency of both masks above, but in my view, a slightly better product. This mask claims to brighten, hydrate, soothe and contribute to anti-aging. Aswell as rose extract and rose flower oil, this mask includes loose black tea leaves, the polyphenols of which accelerate skin renegeration. It also has a bunch of botanical extracts and fruit oils at the top of the list, and is paraben free. There's a full review coming up of this mask, and if it sounds like something for you, make sure to use my discount code BARELYTHEREBEAUTY for 8% off the price here with free worldwide shipping (I don't gain anything from the code).

Bit of a cult favourite in the blogging world, I think the Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer (£55 for 30ml, here for the US) is expensive! There's no denying that it gives you smooth, soft skin with a mattified effect and minimised pores. Korean brand VDL have come up with what looks like a very similar primer, the Satin Veil Primer (~£11 for 30ml) - see more in this post. Both primers look and sound the part, coming in nice, cloudy glass bottles. The formulas differ somewhat, the Hourglass is milky and thinner, the VDL is thick and clear. The Hourglass has SPF 15, which really doesn't bother me as I'm always going to apply a dedicated sunscreen anyway. The feel of the serums are definitely different - the VDL has a more silicone-like feel, although it's more smooth and creamy than some of the stereotypical silicone primers. Both have the same effect of creating a smooth base, filling in fine lines, minimising the appearance of pores and mattifying the skin to a satin finish.

I don't know if they get a bit forgotten because they were first released such a long time ago, but the Ceramide Capsules from Elizabeth Arden (£65 for 60, here for the US) I think are wildly underrated. Admittedly very 'silicone-y', the squalene, ceramide and retinol infused formula makes up for it for me, and I use these as much as I can whenever my skin can handle the richness. Neogen's Ceramide Oil (£18 for 50ml) is a similar concept, and although it's still definitely oily in texture, feels a lot lighter and sinks in faster than the capsules. A much longer list of ingredients, this dual-phase serum-oil contains niacinamide, ceramide 3, honey, avocado, snail, glycerin, peptides and a lot of plant extracts.

Another Fresh product and this time it's the Sugar Face Polish ($62 for 125g, here for the US). A brown sugar base, this also contains strawberry seeds to exfoliate, as well as calendilia wax and fruit seed oils to emulsify, nourish and moisturise the skin. After having a look at the ingredients in Skinfood's Black Sugar Mask (£8 for 100g), it's surprising how similar they are. With a black sugar (or molasses) base, rich in minerals and vitamins, this also includes calendilia wax, botanical oils and shea butter to moisturise as you exfoliate, but at a much lower price! Skinfood even do variations, including a new honey one which I think i'll be procuring and  this one with strawberry seeds, arguably an even better dupe!

I really like including a serum high in hyaluronic acid in my skincare routine, but finding a good one hasn't been my easiest task. Let's not pretend I wasn't first attracted to the Pestle & Mortar Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum (£33 for 30ml) for it's minimalist good looks, although at second glance I think it's a little misleading. No doubt that it hydrates the skin, and is a solid serum, but the name leads me to believe hyaluronic acid would be it's only ingredient? Not so. A base of water and aloe, sodium hyaluronate is accompanied by cucumber, butylene glycol, vitamin E, glycerin, thickeners and preservatives. Back to The Saem for it's dupe, one of my favourite affordable Korean brands. Their Power Ampoule Hydra (£10 for 40ml) contains a mere 3 ingredients: sodium hyaluronate, hydrolysed hyaluronic acid and butylene glycol. The more pure the hyaluronic, the more careful you have to be when using it, so definitely be sure to lock this one in with something occlusive, like my current fave hydrating IOPE cream, so it can get to work. The dupe also applies for the Deciem Hylamide too, it's a very similar product.

I mentioned in my full review of my Ciracle serums, that I thought the B5 Source ($18 for 30ml) was a pretty good dupe for the cult fave Skinceuticals B5 Gel (£43 for 30ml). Both are lightweight serums that hydrate the skin and offer the benefits of a high concentration of panthenol or vitamin B5. B5 is able to penetrate the skin and help to maintain it's moisture barrier. Both serums have a nice, 'slippy' feel and feel like they hydrate equally well, take a look at my review for Before & After's

5-ways-feel-pretty-barely-there-beauty-makeup-photography

We're constantly bombarded with glossy images of the 'perfect women' and living up to the standard the media creates can knock our confidence, when we should be feeling pretty every day. Today I'm sharing 5 easy ways to feel prettier in no time at all.

Get your hair done.

I love a good, swishy blow out or deep conditioning treatment to make me feel more confident and attractive. The whole experience of going to get your hair done is something I love doing - from the head massages (and massage chairs if you can get them), to having my hair brushed and played with. And don't think you can't replicate the results on a budget, I love to indulge in a few masks and treatments at home and give my locks some indulgence - my latest love being the Davines Nounou mask (US here) and Momo potion (US here), followed by the Oribe Supershine Cream (US here) - let me know if you'd like to see a haircare post!

Coat your lashes in castor oil.

This is one of my favourite beauty tricks. It's something I've been doing on and off for a couple of years, when my lashes feel a bit brittle, dry or short and it works for me every time. I soak the tip of a cotton bud and run it along both upper and lower lashlines every night before bed and I see results in a matter of weeks. Honestly, don't waste your money on lash growth serums before you've tried this (I like this one atm).

Nurture yourself.

Feeling beautiful has a lot to do with care, and giving yourself the works, especially if you don't do it often, can make you feel worlds better about yourself. Especially as things are beginning to turn darker and colder, I love running myself an indulgent bath - I'm really into bath oils and oily sugar scrubs at the moment. I love the ESPA lavender and REN rose oils for soothing and relaxation, although next on the list is the sumptuous Inner Strength bath oil from Aromatherapy Associates, it's a deliciously heady mix of clary sage, frankincense and cardamom. Half the battle to feeling pretty, I feel, is having a good skin day, so whilst I'm soaking away my troubles in the bath, I love to apply my Grown Alchemist oil (review here) and seal it in with my Madecassoside sheet mask to soothe my skin and blitz blemishes.

Wear beautiful lingerie.

Beautiful underwear isn't just for date night, and considering it unimportant/frivolous might suggest you're undervaluing your private life compared to your public life. I don't care what size you are, wearing something luxurious, well made and and darn right sexy makes us girls feel subtly more beautiful, feminine and empowered. Lacy numbers I'm loving down further down!

Take a different perspective.

The next time you look in the mirror and start judging yourself too harshly, try to pretend you're a friend, and I bet you won't be half as critical. Would they think your pores are too big? Or that your nose is crooked? Or that your boobs sag? Of course they wouldn't, because a lot of that are vices only we feel.

How do you like to make yourself feel prettier? Leave your top tips down below!

7 TIPS FOR DETOXING STRESSED SKIN.

detox-stressed-skin-acne-korean-skincare-tips

My skin is the first place to show signs of stress. I get it all - from dry, flaky patches, eczema, oiliness, blemishes, chapped lips, redness, irritation, you name it. Today I'm sharing some of my go-to tips and favourite products for reviving my unhappy skin back to health.

bad-skin-acne-tips-barely-there-beauty

CLEANSING

When my skin has gone awol, I always turn to cleansing waters. Whether my symptoms are dry patches or excess oiliness, I find cleansing or micellar waters to be the most gentle on my skin, and I especially love the formulations that bridge the gap between cleansers and toners as I find them more hydrating. In the higher end range, I love the ByTerry Micellar Water (here for US), that includes a mixture of rose cells and extracts to soothe, calm and gently brighten skin, the Espa Purifying Micellar Cleanser, which has a reverse pump and chamomile to quieten aggravated skin, and the Su:m37 Skin Saver Cleansing Water, with vitamin B5 and a bunch of fermented ingredients. For a more affordable option, the REN Rosa Centafolia and Neogen Rose cleansing waters (reviews here) have been big favourites with their heady, intoxicating rose scent and slightly thicker, more hydrating formulas. The new Etude House Acne Control Cleansing Water would be a good option for blemished skin, as the mixture of salicylic acid, madecassoside, tea tree and garlic clarify the skin whilst removing face makeup.

SOFTENERS & REFINERS

This is one of my favourite steps in calming and destressing my skin, and that's using a super hydrating toner with a formulation somewhere in between a cleansing water and a serum. When my skin is clearly stressed, I don't want to overload it with heavy or occlusive ingredients and this kind of lightweight texture hydrates my skin without silicones or oils, leaving it feeling really fresh, calm and plump. I've used the Laneige Skin Power Moisture Refiner for years and it always provides my skin with hydration, without the heaviness, and without having to be 'locked in' like a hyaluronic acid serum. If your skin errs on the oily side and isn't sensitive when it's stressed out, the Tata Harper Hydrating Essence Toner includes vitamin C to fight free radicals and brighten skin whilst hydrating. I like to douse my skin in one of these toners, pat in for a good few seconds, then place a cold, damp flannel over my face and let everything steep - I find the coolness really helps calm any puffiness or irritation.

acne-tips-korean-skincare-cushion-foundation-review

MAKEUP

Applying a fuller face of makeup is only going to make my skin worse, so I stick to my tried and tested arsenal of 'safe' makeup that I know won't exacerbate the situation. Mineral powders really work for me, specifically this Laura Mercier one (here for US), as I can buff gently over the skin for a sheer coverage and a little confidence, then take a flat concealing brush and build up in areas I have blemishes if I need to. For drier patches, I like to rub in the tiniest drop of oil to just those areas before foundation, and it really stops the powder grabbing at any dry spots. My other go to is the Hera UV Mist cushion foundation (review + try on here). This one plumps up my skin, knocks redness back and leaves a supremely beautiful, healthy finish, so that even if my skin is feeling fraught and harrowed, it doesn't look it.

SNAIL

I'm a believer in the snail. Products including snail secretion filtrate seem to have such a positive effect on my skin, they're very soothing, calming, restorative and healing. I love the Mizon Snail Recovery Gel, which includes 74% snail alongside peptides etc, and is silky and lightweight, providing enough moisture alone for my combo skin. The Snail 96 Power Essence from Cosrx is another favourite - it's more sticky in texture but still very lightweight and has 96% snail secretion filtrate. I find that this one is better for layering under other products.

FACE MASKS

We've already talked about sheet masks but there are a few, more traditional masks that I reach for when my skin is stressing, the first of which is my Aura mask from Antipodes. The manuka honey combats blemishes and breakouts and the creamy texture is moisturising yet light - I love the natural essence of this brand too. Gel-type rose masks are a big favourite, as the mixture of the cool, gel texture and soothing rose-derived ingredients always calms and soothes my skin. The Skin79 Rose Waterfull mask is a prime example, as well as the Dearpacker Rose mask (an amazing dupe for the Fresh Rose mask - see my other Korean Skincare Dupes here) that includes black tea to rejuvenate and draw out toxins (use the code BARELYTHEREBEAUTY for 8% off the site, and I don't benefit from the code). I'm giving an honourable mention to the Earth Tu Face Honey Rose Coconut mask (here for US) as I haven't been using it long at all but I already love the jelly consistency and rose and raw honey are ingredients I look for to destress my skin.

SHEET MASKS

It seems like there's a sheet mask solution to every ailment, and I've got a handful I love for stressed skin days. Just like my flannel situation I mentioned above, the very act of putting on a sheet mask is cooling and destressing, and I like to chill mine in the fridge for around 10-20 minutes before use if my skin's feeling a little inflamed or puffy. My go-to masks are definitely the Madecassoside mask from Innisfree, which soothes and calms distressed skin with madecassic acid - a derivative of the parsley family, and the Innisfree Rose mask (I really like Innisfree masks). I also love something we're seeing more of now, and that's charcoal sheet masks. Charcoal works really well to purify and detoxify skin, as well as acting as an anti-inflammatory, and I love that you can get those benefits now without the mess, in a sheet mask. I've been trying the Soo Ae Charcoal Flower Essence Masks for the last few months and love them.

HYDRATION

Most of the time, the thicker toners mentioned above, along with a moisturising cushion foundation, is enough for me, and for when it's not, I like to introduce a simple moisturiser to make my skin feel happier. I want one that plumps up my skin, and sinks in sufficiently, without leaving my face feeling greasy, heavy, sticky or dry. The Verso Day Cream is a thin but film-forming moisturiser that feels like it seals everything in. It includes a gentle mix of retinols to contribute to anti-aging, that do not irritate my skin at all, I can wear this moisturiser on my most fragile of days. The Aqualia Thermal moisturiser from Vichy is slightly richer, but makes my skin really plump, fades any signs of dehydration and is gentle enough to use when my skin is stressing.

The moment when, as a blogger, you break your camera..

I wanted to give a little explanation as to why I might seem to be posting a little less frequently at the moment! I thought I was being really smart by wrapping the camera strap around my wrist because it's a heavy piece of kit and I didn't want to drop it whilst taking flatlays. Unfortunately, that backfired when I went to get more props and tripped over a cable on the way back.. So I'm currently checked into Heartbreak Hotel whilst I wait for it to be repaired, so apologies for posts being a little thin on the ground at the moment and thank you all for your patience - I'll get things going again as soon as I can!

In the meantime I'll share a few photos from Instagram lately, starting with some beautiful blooms from Blossoming Gifts. If you didn't see my full review, they were generous enough to give me the code BGIFTS33 for 33% off (from which I don't benefit btw!) your choice of beautiful bouquets, I plumped for roses (obviously) and I feel like I need some more, now that it's getting colder and more miserable!

Need to give a mention to my Grown Alchemist lipbalm, which is my new favourite friend - the watermelon scent is like the last piece of summer as the season wanes, and it moisturises my lips exceptionally - they've been chapped, dry and crappy lately and this is doing wonders.

As for posts, I wrote about rebooting your life in September, and even though we're now in October (birthday month eek!), all the tips are still relevant, so you may find it useful! Another set of tips is my 5 Favourite Ways To Feel Prettier - and they're all easy as pie. I'm going to do an updated what's in my makeup bag as soon as I can get some pictures down, but check out the third pic above (or my Insta) for some strong favourites.

To round things up, I want to show some love for Vee's array of beautiful highlighters including the Modern Mercury highlighter *swoon* - go and give her account a follow, so many gorgeous products.

Like I mentioned above, October means birthday for me, and I'm stuck with my wishlist! What makeup and skincare items are you lusting after?? Let me know in the comments below!

RIMMEL SCANDALEYES RELOADED MASCARA & EYELINER REVIEW.

black-white-flatlay-blog-photography-review-rimmel-scandaleyes-reloaded

Well hello beauties, the camera is fixed and I am back! (and thank you for your patience whilst I've been AWOL). If you've been with me a while here on BTB, you'll know that I am the harshest critic of mascara and liquid liners, an ardent and devoted supporter of just the one or two of each.

best-drugstore-liner-blog-review-rimmel-scandaleyes-reloaded

I've been loyal to my beloved Chanel Inimitable for several years, trying and dismissing plenty of other mascaras that don't meet my altudinous standards - which is why you almost never hear me talk about mascaras here. Liners are a similar story, the Stila Stay All Day and Tom Ford liners are my go to and nothing else compares. I'm a self-confessed mascara snob - lower end mascaras have left me wanting. Frankly, when it comes to mascara and liquid liners, I just don't mess with drugstore. So admittedly I was dubious when a brightly coloured package of liners and mascaras from Rimmel arrived on my doorstep. They make some pretty big claims with their latest launch and I was truly interested to see if items that retail for less than £10 could possibly live up to them. I'll let you know from the outset, there's a mix of HG worthy and wah-wah - so let's jump into it!

monochrome-beauty-makeup-flatlay-rimmel-scandaleyes-reloaded

Claims

The new Scandaleyes Reloaded mascara £4.99, claims to be the answer for those who want voluminous, carbon black, large and in charge lashes, that stay put all day, through whatever life throws at you, but removes easily without irritation or hardship. The patent-pending formula is supposed to be smudge-proof, sweat-proof, flake-proof and humidity-proof thanks to a wax grafted polymer, and promises to build volume, which you can apparently layer up to 11 times without it looking horrible and clumpy. It's pretty far removed from the original Scandaleyes mascara, with changes to the brush, and most importantly the formula.

rimmel-scandaleyes-reloaded-mascara-liner-blog-photography-monochrome

rimmel-scandaleyes-reloaded-mascara-brush-review

Packaging

I won't try and convince you that the packaging is beautiful, because it's not. A sizable, plastic tube, it's pretty bulky and brash with it's fiery orange colouring. But this is drugstore, and if this is where we're making our savings, by forgoing luxurious packaging, then so be it. The tube does have a lovely, affirmative click shut which I like. The brush is huge, a little too big for me, although there are no gimmicks - no curves or weirdly shaped bristles etc - it's a tapered, bristled brush (not plastic or silicone) in a classic shape that I really like.

rimmel-scandaleyes-reloaded-mascara-review-flatlay-photography

First Impressions

Firstly let's understand my lash situation. They're pretty crappy. They're not full, not long, are stick straight, Asian and stubborn. I tried applying the mascara straight onto bare, uncurled lashes and it was a definite pass - they just looked heavy, weighed down and straight. If you've stubborn, Asian lashes, I don't think this mascara is going to hold a curl for you unaided, especially as it's such a wet, glossy formula. Remove and reconvene. After a little play, I found the best results came with a really thorough curl with my CT lash curlers, and a coat of an empty tube of waterproof mascara on the roots of the lashes, to hold them in place. Then I go in with Scandaleyes on the rest of my lashes to build up volume and seal everything in. With this technique, it's so much better. The tubing-style mascara almost provides a vinyl-like coating that really reminds me of the Thierry Mugler vinyl lash topper that was around years ago. It's wet, slick and glossy, possibly a little too much for me as I'd prefer a dried, more fluffy look, so I'm secretly hoping it improves with a little drying out and maturing like a fine wine #mascaraaging.

rimmel-scandaleyes-reloaded-mascara-review-extreme-black

Performance

The mascara comes in both Black and Extreme Black - I can't really tell the difference between them. I don't know why they bothered with 'Black' - if I want big volume, I want deep, rich colour, so would always plump for Extreme Black over just Black. The two things I was interested in were 1) is it really smudgeproof, long lasting and reliable? Because I can get waterproof to smudge on me. And 2) how easy is this to remove? Because waterproof, long lasting mascara can be a bitch. I'm really happy to report that this lasts all day. I can rub at my eyes, sweat, crease up with laughter and nothing. My lashes are still an acute shade of onyx, and none of the intensity or volume is lost. And the best part? It removes completely with warm water! Or with micellar water on a cotton pad, without tugging, scraping, or getting the oils out. I'll be sharing pics of me wearing all the products in this post so head on over here for a peek.

rimmel-scandaleyes-reloaded-mascara-review-barely-there-beauty

rimmel-scandaleyes-reloaded-mascara-review-eyeliner

Conclusion

This mascara isn't going to be for everyone. If you have already decent natural lashes, that curl easily and stay curled, I'm pretty sure you'll love this. If you like a glossy, vinyl look, tons of volume and can get on well with a huge brush, you'll also love it, especially for the price - it lives up to it's claims of being long wearing and reliable, and removes really easily. For me, it's a little too difficult to work with, as I can't use it on it's own and I'd prefer a fluffier, more feathery finish.

rimmel-scandaleyes-waterproof-liner-review

Let's move onto the liners. Along with the mascara, there are a couple of new liquid/felt tip liners to play with and now these, I'm definitely on board with. There are two tip styles: The Precision Micro - a fine, traditional tip for thin lines and wings, and the Thick & Thin - a highlighting pen tip that you can do both thin and thicker lines with. I mentioned above that I'm a strict devotee of the Stila Stay All Day and Tom Ford liners, so I didn't expect something from the drugstore to even compare. However, the moment I swatched the Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof eyeliners £5.49, I immediately thought these had potential. The colour is deliciously inky and intense, and the formula seeps out of the saturated, precise tips with ease so that you're not tugging on your skin. Give these a few seconds to dry and they do not budge. I can rub at the swatches on my hand and there's no movement, no flaking, and no dip in intensity. On the eye, they're just as long lasting, staying put through humidity and sweat, smiling and laughing.

rimmel-scandaleyes-thick-thin-eyeliner-review
rimmel-scandaleyes-eyeliner-waterproof-swatches

A couple of things that I really like are that the liner layers really nicely. For those of us that aren't liquid liner experts, I find it really useful to be able to adjust and correct, even after the liner is dry, and still have the finish look perfect. The liner lasted a good 8 hours on my eye before I took it off, with the flick staying nice and crisp, but I could tell from the swatches on my hand/arm that these are liners that fade nicely rather than crack or crumble. It'll be interesting to see how quickly they dry out, as that's something that I love about the Stila liner, but so far, I'm thoroughly impressed and would definitely recommend - they're better than any other drugstore liquid-style liner I've tried.

A big thank you to Rimmel for letting me try these goodies, have you tried any of these latest products? Let me know your favourite mascaras and liquid liners below!

AROMATICA SEA DAFFODIL AQUA GEL CREAM.

barely-there-beauty-korean-skincare-aromatica-sea-daffodil-review
First up, a thank you to you all for being patient Polly's whilst I sort out my camera situation, posts will be more regular asap! Today, I'm here with a full rundown of the Aromatica Sea Daffodil Aqua Gel Cream, first featured in my Kbeauty haul from Buttermilk Skincare. Gel creams are some of my favourite skincare items, but I've always found it hard to find a good one: one that offers hydration, lightness and top notch ingredients, so let's see how this one fares.

barely-there-beauty-korean-skincare-aromatica-sea-daffodil-review-buttermilk

aromatica-sea-daffodil-aqua-gel-cream-review-swatch

First Impressions

What's not to enjoy about the minimalist, tranquility-inducing packaging - a translucent, frosted glass bottle, accented in white and seafoam, with a pump dispenser to keep the contents fresh and application hygienic. I mentioned in my haul post that I love the scent, a fresh and envigorating mix of lemon and botanical notes, like lemon verbena and bergamot. Although made predominantly from aloe vera, the cream comes out pretty opaque and voluminous, sitting like fresh dew upon the skin. However at the first swipe, you'll notice how light the formula is, sheering out to nothingness but imparting hydration that's noticeable.

Ingredients

Aloe Vera Leaf Extract (84%), Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid, Babassu Seed Oil, Lauryl Olivate, Betaine, Sodium Carbomer, Tocopheryl, Cetearyl Alcohol, Behenyl Alcohol, Soybean Sterols, Hydrogenated Lethicin, Polyglyceryl-10 Distearate, Ceramide 3, Sea Daffodil Extract, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Glyceryl Caprylate, Citric Acid, Allantoin, Sodium Phytate, Phenethyl Alcohol, Levulinic Acid, Sodium Levulinate, P-anisic Acid, Bergamot Fruit Oil, Lemon Peel Oil, Orange Peel Oil, Atlas Cedar Bark Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Adenosine.

As you can see, over three quarters of this formula is aloe, which we all know is a great, lightweight hydrator, followed by the humectants glycerin and hyaluronic acid, and Babassu oil, a Brazilian palm oil that has similar salubrious benefits as coconut oil. Sea Daffodil extract helps to inhibit the melanin transference to the skin that cause dark spots, whilst providing an abundance of moisture to the skin. Ceramides are some of my favourite skincare ingredients, preventing moisture loss and keeping skin moist and supple.

Performance

I love how this feels on my skin. It's feather light, and has such slip that a really small amount goes a long way. My skin certainly feels quenched and hydrated, feeling plump without any of the heavinesss. The balance of texture is great for combination skin like mine, it's rich enough to moisturise drier patches, whilst not overwhelming more oily areas. On oilier days, I feel this is enough to wear alone, although it sits well over my lighter, more water-based serums, and doesn't affect my makeup application or wear time - I feel this would be perfectly suitable for oily skins. For drier skins I'd recommend something richer, like an essence oil. What I love most about this gel cream is the formula - I love the premise of using neat aloe vera gel but hate how sticky and gloopy it feels on my skin. With the Sea Daffodil gel cream, you get the benefits of aloe vera (calming sensitized or sun damaged skin for example), but in a much more elegant and useable form. I would highly recommend this to include in your routine, it's an excellent hydrator, which is paramount for younger skin especially to prevent premature aging.

Aromatica Sea Daffodil Gel Cream | £30 for 100ml

SKINCHEMISTS ADVANCED SNAIL RANGE.

I'm sure you're all bored of me talking about snails now, but the fact is, they're one of my favourite skincare ingredients.

Whilst I've tried many a snail product within Korean/Asian skincare, I've really not played with many from Western brands, leading to me jumping at the chance when Skinchemists offered to let me try their Advanced Snail range. I've only ever seen their brand on the odd occasion when browsing the crowded shelves of TKMaxx but Skinchemists are a London based science-nature-hybrid skincare brand that pride themselves on using plant-derived ingredients and being paraben and cruelty free.

Claims

Their Advanced Snail Serum claims to regenerate and fortify skin, whilst boosting hydration levels, whilst the Snail Duo Moisturiser promises to lightly moisturise skin and protect with antioxidants, whilst contributing to anti-aging with peptides.

Packaging

I very much like the aesthetic of both products. The bottle design is light and fresh, chic and simple, and although made of plastic, they look high end. They're nice and sturdy, and both serum and cream are dispensed via pump - keeping the contents fresh and application hygienic. The packaging reminds me of high end Korean skincare (eg Hera), although there's no way of seeing how much product you have left, and no forseeable way of dismantling the bottles to make sure you've used every last drop.

First Impressions

Both products are voluminous and rigid in texture, rather than being fluid, and have a satisfying smear across the skin (the serum is on the right in the above photo). The scent to me is absolutely delicious - somewhere in between apricot and Elemis' Papaya Enzyme Peel, that fades after a few moments, although you'll see later that there are a fair few fragrance ingredients that contribute to that scent, some of which could cause irritation or sensitivity, so make sure you're not allergic to them. I've had no sensitivity or irritation to speak of whatsoever and I'm in love with the scent, it makes the experience of applying these products an absolute pleasure for me, and again, remind me of Korean skincare.

Ingredients

Advanced Snail Serum

Water, Carbomer, Glycerin, Benzyl Alcohol, Allantoin, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Hydroxide, Polylactic Acid, Disodium EDTA, Snail Secretion Filtrate, Dehydroacetic Acid, Butylene Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Parfum, Aloe Leaf Juice Powder, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Charcoal Powder, Seabuckthorn Fruit Oil, Pumice, Tocopheryl Acetate, Isomalt, Benzyl Salicylate, Glucose, Hexyl Cinnamal, Citronellol, Subtilisin, Hydrolyzed Pearl, Limonene, Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil, Shea Butter Seedcake Extract, Geraniol, Linalool, Neroli Flower Oil, Rosa Damascena Flower Oil, Sodium Lactate, Lecithin, Rhodedendron Ferrugineum Leaf Cell Culture Extract, Dipeptide Diaminobutyroyl Benzylamide Diacetate, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Benzoate, Lactic Acid, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, CI 17200 (Red 33).

Advanced Snail Duo Moisturiser

Water, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Cetearyl Alcohol, Stearic Acid, Coconut Oil, Isoceteth-20, Polysorbate 20, Phenoxyethanol, Benzyl Alcohol, Carbomer, Polylactic Acid, Disodium EDTA, Ethylhexylglycerin, Snail Secretion Filtrate, Dehydroacetic Acid, Butylene Glycol, Dipeptide Diaminobutyroyl Benzylamide Diacetate, Parfum, Tiare Flower Extract, Aloe Leaf Juice Powder, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Seabuckthorn Fruit Oil, Pumice, Tocopheryl Acetate, Isomalt, Benzyl Salicylate, Glucose, Hexyl Cinnamal, Citronellol, Subtilisin, Hydrolyzed Pearl, Limonene, Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil, Shea Butter Seedcake Extract, Geraniol, Linalool, Neroli Flower Oil, Rosa Damascena Flower Oil, Sodium Lactate, Lecithin, Charcoal Powder,Rhodedendron Ferrugineum Leaf Cell Culture Extract, Sodium Benzoate, Lactic Acid, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, CI 17200 (Red 33).

I was a little confused when it came to ingredients, as I'm sure I've read something about hyaluronic acid but can't see it in the ingredients list? (I took the lists above from the box, someone please correct me if I'm being blind!) The formula has a good number of natural and skin-benefitting extracts, such as pearl to brighten and add luminosity to the skin, sugars to hydrate and hold onto moisture, a mix of peptides for skin fortifying and anti-aging, and of course the snail secretion filtrate to fortify and repair. There are also quite a few fragrances, as mentioned above, preservatives and emulsifiers, so just make sure to check whether you're sensitive to any of these. Something I thought that was interesting is the inclusion of Dipeptide Diaminobutyroyl Benzylamide Diacetate in both products, another name for the anti-aging peptide SYN AKE, which has shown in clinical studies to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Performance

Both products smooth over the skin effortlessly and leave a slight tackiness that sets quickly to a demi-matte finish, especially the moisturiser. What I love about them is how plump and supple my skin feels after using them, a feeling and appearance which lasts overnight, and I do think my skin feels more firm. The volume I observed on first impressions, translates to volume in the skin once the products have had a moment to sink in. Both the finish and the plumping factor make these a great primer for under makeup, I wear one or the other on my combo skin in the day, and a light layer of both at night, and my skin doesn't feel or look greasy. For dry skins, I'd recommend using both products, possibly with another oil or serum layered underneath, and for very oily skins I'd say these might be too rich for you. My favourite way to use the moisturiser especially is to 'cap' oils at night - which just involves applying this on top of an oil or essence-oil. I love my Banila Co Honey Flower Essence Oil but hate the feeling of oily skin on my pillow, and the mattifying qualities of the Skinchemists Duo Moisturiser is perfect to reduce that, whilst adding yet more hydration.

Conclusion

I think it's fairly obvious from my review that I really like these products. I'd only say to be wary of some of the ingredients, and make sure you're not allergic or sensitive to them. I think if you're looking for a concentrated snail product then these won't be for you, and I'd recommend the Cosrx Snail Mucin, which is made of 96% snail. However, if you go in with more of an open mind, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Both products, especially used together, give my skin such volume and bounce - and I thoroughly love that, it's not the easiest to come across in good skincare. Bonus points for getting that volume with a demi-matte finish, I'm almost certain I'll be restocking when they've run out. These items are far from cheap, retailing at around the £70 mark, but Skinchemists have been incredibly generous in giving my followers the code SNAIL16 for a whopping 70% off for a limited time on the serum or duo moisturiser.

YSL COUTURE CONTOURING PALETTE.

ysl-couture-contouring-palette-review

I stumbled across the newly launched Couture Contouring Palette by YSL (available here at Feelunique, Boots, House of Fraser or at Nordstrom and Bergdorf Goodman for those is the US), a simple compact featuring both a contour and highlight shade, completely on a whim and it was nigh on love at first sight. Keep reading for more pics, you've got to see how beautiful this palette is!

ysl-best-contour-palette-couture-golden-01-review

As many of them out there as there are, I have never managed to find a powder contour palette that I'm happy with. Every time, I'm met with some kind of flaw, whether the contour shade is too warm in colour, too muddy, the tone is off, the highlighter is glittery, the powders don't blend well, they're too pigmented, or the packaging is too bulky.

ysl-palette-contour-couture-high-end-beauty-makeup

Encased in the beautiful gold packaging we've come to expect of YSL, the compact is nice and slimline, and sized just like all of their other face-product cases. The contour shade inside is a lovely, cool but flattering brown - the perfect shade for my NC 20-25 skin, to resemble natural, completely indetectable shadow. It looks incredibly fair in the pan but has a surprising amount of colour. The highlight is equally as beautiful in my eyes, far more subtle than say the Laura Mercier Face Illuminators or MaryLoumanizer, but exactly what I look for - a soft, flattering champagne, richly pigmented but not overdone, and giving an ethereal luminosity to the skin. This isn't one for those who like a highlight 'on fleek', and doesn't show up particularly well in photographs but has that soft-focus, candlelit glow that looks exquisite in person. Both powders are creamy and smooth, especially the contour, and blend exceptionally on the skin - even the lightest hand still gives colour - look out for swatches, more snaps and try ons on my Instagram.

ysl-best-contour-powder-palette-high-end-luxury-makeup-beauty-review

The palette comes in two shades, both of which I think would only really be suitable for fair-ish skins as the options are more of a tonal difference rather than one being darker than the other - 02 Rosy is more pinkish/warm in tone, whereas the slightly ashier 01 Golden suits my skin better.

I'm not saying that my hunt for the perfect contour palette is over, but I'm thoroughly impressed.

TOM FORD SHIMMER SHOTS.

I've been waiting for this singular bottle of fairy dust for what now feels like eons. You may have already seen me parade it's beauty on my Instagram, and now I'm here to do the same. Introducing the brand new Tom Ford Shimmer Shots, bottled liquid glow available here at John Lewis and Selfridges, or at Nordstrom and Bergdorf Goodman for those in the US. Read on for more snaps, swatches and more affordable alternatives!

I'm becoming rather the highlight addict, and although I have many a soft, pearlescent highlighter that is akin to the Shimmer Shot, I still 'needed' it. The packaging is as beautiful as you would expect - twist the lid to reveal the pump, my favourite method to dispense liquid creams. A very travel-friendly bottle as there are no lids to lose, although one full pump I feel is overgenerous - a little goes a long way, which is just as well as you only get 15ml of product.

tom-ford-shimmer-shots-review-spin-spin-sugar-blog

The texture is beautifully soft and manageable, blending seamlessly whether you apply on top of makeup as a highlight or mix into your foundation for an inner radiance. It sets down nicely to a matte feel that's not tacky nor gloopy. The product comes in 2 shades, Spin Spin Sugar being my clear favourite - a perfectly balanced champagne-oyster shade. (Lust For Life translated far too orange-y on my skin). It gives an alluringly pearly sheen to the skin, catching the light beautifully and not looking obvious or chunky. The formula hides teeny specks of silvery microglitter which are only apparent if you look really closely. I'm perfectly happy to pay high prices for beauty but I expect a little quality - a refined and elegant formula that's not just relying on the brand name, and that's what I love about this product - it delivers.

You may be like me and need all the highlighters, but it's always nice to have more affordable options, so here are a few that are by no means exact dupes but you can see a resemblance, especially when blended out.

So what do you think? Will you be picking up a Shimmer Shot? And let me know if you'd like an updated Favourite Highlighters post!

afternoon-tea-number-16-london-review
Afternoon tea is a big deal in London. There's something about tiny food stacked up in silver towers that raises our mood levels, and it's always the perpetual dilemma of which of the hundreds in London to try next.

afternoon-tea-number-16-london-review

Tucked down a South Ken side street, Number Sixteen is quietly situated amidst the mid-Victorian, stucco terraces we bloggers adore.

Squirreled away at the back of the property, is the beautiful Orangery and private gardens - bright and airy, it's the perfect pitstop to grab a cup of something thirst-quenching during a heavy shopping trip, or indulge in the full tea like we did.

Freshly baked, warm scones, tucked up in their napkin duvet, with the obligatory cream and jam..

.. a medley of neatly cut sandwiches (the bitter chocolate rye bread was.. interesting) and chicken slider..

.. and topped with a deliciously milky pannacotta, lemon tartlet and floral cupcake, all washed down with fresh mint tea for me (although try their Jasmine pearls, delicious).

And some added bonuses to dining at these kind of lesser known jewels; time it right and you can get the dining room to yourself, and without the price premiums of your Ritz's and Sketch's. Now that's a top tip if ever I heard one - we bagged the lot for under £30 a head.

WHAT'S IN MY MAKEUP BAG - FALL 2016 EDIT

makeup-beauty-flatlay-photography-barely-there-beauty-blog

These are some of my very favourite beauty blogger posts to read, and as my last one was a pretty long time ago, I thought today I'd do an updated edition - although, insider update, I shot these photos just before my birthday, so the YSL Couture Contour (full review here) and Tom Ford Shimmer Shot (full review here) have definitely since made the cut - let's just pretend they're gracing the edit with their presence.. Anyway, let's get cracking with what's in my autumnal makeup bag!

what's-in-my-makeup-bag

what's-in-my-makeup-bag-flatlay-photography-high-end

YSL Blur Perfector£32.50 (here for US) | Whilst I use this before makeup as a bit of a blurring primer, it's actually working quite well as a 'blotter' throughout the day. Much like the CoverFX Custom Blot Drops, you can take a little bit of the balm and apply on top of makeup, over shiny, oily areas, to mattify them without adding extra powder. I like to use my ring finger and tap as gently as possible, rather than smearing it around, so as not to disturb the makeup underneath. And other than it being a product I really like, who could resist it's beautiful packaging anyway?

Charlotte Tilbury Miracle Eye Wand in Shade 2 £29 (here for US) | I've been known to top up under the eyes with this double ended wand throughout the day - actually patting a little of the eye cream on top of concealer part way through the day gives things a little refresh and resmoothes makeup that might have creased under my eyes in that time. I love it as it's so light in texture and leaves my skin looking bright and radiant.

what's-in-my-makeup-bag-flatlay-photography-high-end

Laura Mercier Caviar Eyesticks £23 (here for US) | These dinky little minis of the Caviar Eyesticks are perfect for popping into your makeup bag - not that you should need on the go touchups with these, as the formula is so budgeproof. Rosegold and Amythest are stunning shades, the latter a favourite for an all-over-the-eyelid smudge - just add mascara. You can get them in this gift set of minis (and here for US).

Nars Sheer Glow£31 (here for US) | So I've gone back to this foundation - the quiet favourite of old that's sat in the background whilst I experiment with every cushion I can get my hands on. Funnily enough, I've been applying it with an airpuff, as you'd find in cushion compacts, and find that this way, the coverage and finish seems to be even more beautiful and even than usual.

mua-luxe-enrapture-enchanted-eyeshadow-palettes-review

MUA Luxe Palette in Enrapture£6 - You may have caught sight of these palettes on my Instagram as I've been going a bit snap happy with them - they have an incredibly beautiful aesthetic and are nigh on carbon copies of the Hourglass eye palettes. Fortunately, these are far less expensive, coming in at just £6 a pop! Enrapture, the darker and more purple of the two shade choices available, has some beautiful, muted shades that make for a great, soft-smokey eye - I especially like the dark shade in the corner, with it's pinkish shimmer suspended in the moody base.

Grown Alchemist Hydra Mist £18 | My love for face mists have grown, and I love refreshing my face during the day, frankly whether it needs it or not now! This little number from Grown Alchemist is so handbag friendly, it beats taking some of my more bulky bottles, and the olive and sugar extracts make my skin feel revived - check out my full review of the Grown Alchemist range.

makeup-beauty-photography-banila-co-honey-flower-essence-oil-review

Banila Co Honey Flower Essence Oil£25 | This is one of my favourite skincare items of the moment. You get the nourishment and moisturisation of an oil, but without the heavy, greasy feeling. Enriched with honey, it smells divine like nectar, and makes my skin feel smooth and plump. I even like to apply a little of this along my cheekbones on top of makeup as a bit of a highlight - it's beautiful.

Charlotte Tilbury Dark Pearl £19 (here for US) | Can you tell I like cream shadow sticks? This one I think is a particularly beautiful shade. I love it as you can leave it intense and pigmented at the lashline and smudge the outer edges and it gives an effortlessly multi-dimensional look - it looks like you've gone in with multiple shadows, and expended a lot more effort than you really have.

Charlotte Tilbury Amber Moon £29 (here for US) | Again, this is the perfect product to take your look from day to night. I just smudge a little (or a lot) of this chocolatey brown pencil into my lashline and smudge it a little to make it blown out and smokey. It's such a soft, easily workable pencil and the teeny speckles of golden-copper shimmery give some interest (A good alternative would be Pixi's Bronzebeam).

tom-ford-powder-luxe-high-end-beauty-review

Tom Ford Translucent Finishing Powder in Sable Voile£56 (here for US) | Although this is marketed as a translucent powder, it's far from - in fact it's quite pigmented. I take Sable Voile, much darker than my own skin, to use as contour/bronzer as the colour has such a nice tone. The brush included actually works well for contour/bronzing on the go too.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light £40 (here for US) | This is a no brainer to carry around as it's such a versatile powder for me. All over the crease to act as a transitional colour for the eye, through the backs of the cheek to add a teeny bit of warmth and shadow, it's such a forgiving powder that you can use freely and always end up with a good result.

beauty-makeup-photography-nars

Nars Blush in Liberte £23 (here for US) | With all of the reddish tones around in makeup at the moment, I picked up Liberte, a burnished reddened shade that looks admittedly fairly intimidating in the pan. On the cheeks it's a different story - I use a big, fluffy, tapered brush (more often that not the Yachiyo brush) with just a tap of powder and it gives a beautiful flush. Smooth, blendable and buttery like the majority of Nars blushes, this is a great one to consider if you missed out on the Chanel Fall 2016 blush.

Kevin Aucoin Sculpting Duo £22 (here for US) | Is there anything not to love with this palette? This remains to be my all time favourite contour compact (although the newly launched number featured in this post is really challenging top spot) - it's size is dinky and travel-friendly, the formula is smooth and blendable, the finish is beautiful and indiscernable as makeup, and the tone and intensity of colour is perfection.

ROSIE FOR AUTOGRAPH PALETTE HOLIDAY 2016.

rosie-for-autograph-makeup-palette-review-swatches-fall-winter-2016

It's almost been a year, can we believe, since the Rosie For Autograph makeup range launched and I went swatch happy in M&S (refer to this post for the full collection evidence of my swatch party), and I'm still just as utterly enamoured with the range as I was back then. Just in time for Christmas and all that, Rosie's given us a beautiful Eye and Cheek palette, available here, that I ripped open with earnest - read on for swatches and my thoughts!

rosie-for-autograph-makeup-palette-review-swatches-fall-winter-2016

rosie-for-autograph-makeup-palette-review

Carrying on the theme throughout her collection, the packaging is beautifully simple - black, slimline, with just the logo on the lid, picked out in rose gold, although I've got to admit it feels a little plastic-y - but I'll excuse it for what's inside. Open the lid and you're met with 6 shadows, a bronzer, cream highlight, and one of the gorgeous cream blushes, handpicked by Rosie, vegetarian and cruelty free. There's enough here to do a full face which I think is great for travel/convenience and lazy days. Immediately on looking at the palette, it really reminds me of the Marc Jacobs Objects of Desire palette - 6 shadows, consisting of golden neutrals, browns and purpley shades, a blush, highlight and contour, but this one costs £30 less. In fact, you could get both this and one of the gorgeous Stila Perfect Me palettes for the price of the MJ one... paws for thought right?

So starting with the shadows, the overall colour palette is pretty warm and the texture across the board is wonderfully buttery and creamy, with good pigment. I love the plummy shade, it's incredibly beautiful as a wash over the eye, then intensified by using it damp in the centre of the lid. Even the ivory shade, which I usually wouldn't be drawn to, works as a lovely inner corner highlight.

Gossip - Softly metallic, off-white/ivory
Iconic Rose - Creamy, slightly metallic golden beige - similar to (but lighter than) Burberry Pale Barley, not pink at all like the name might suggest.
Velvet Rose - Metallic mulberry with subtle, multifaceted shimmer.
Bitter - Midtoned brown with golden shimmer.
Causing A Stir - True gold metallic.
Talk That Talk - Deep, dark, creamy brown.

rosie-for-autograph-eye-cheek-palette-marc-jacobs-object-of-desire-review

beauty-blog-photography-barely-there-beauty-makeup

Onto cheeks, the powder bronzer, 'Bronzed Beauty', is really pigmented but smooth and blendable. As a bronzer it's nicely neutral in tone, perhaps leaning on the slightly warm side but by no means looking orange-y or muddy. If you've a warm skintone, you could even get away with this as a contour, as it's quite close in colour to the contour stick in the range. For me, I like to use it incredibly lightly, on a big fluffy tapered brush like the RT blush brush, and sweep around the perimeter of my face to add warmth and dimension - really pretty. In fact, there's a new Rosie For Autograph Brush Set that looks stunning, and there's a nice, fat, tapered brush in that - I'm so tempted to pick it up!

'Get That Glow', the cream highlighter in the palette is beautiful. You may have read in my full review of the RFA range how much I adore the loose powder highlighter in Rosebud, and this cream version has a similar colour and tone, something I loved about the original. It's got that pinky-oyster tinge, not dissimilar to Tom Ford's Shimmer Shot in Spin Spin Sugar (full review here) that I really enjoy - it looks stunning on the high points of the cheekbones, especially on reasonably fair skin (I'm a Chanel B20). The formula is lovely and fine, doesn't exaggerate pores, and lasts well on my skin - a good 4-6 hours.

The blush, in 'English Rose Flush', I also love. Similarly creamy, pigmented, smooth, even and blendable as the RFA cream blush compacts, the shade this time is a juicy, rosy pink, with the perfect tone to enliven just about any skin tone - I think this one's really versatile. It has the same name as one of the individual blushes but that seemed more peachy from memory, whereas this one pulls a bit more rosy. Although pigmented, it sheers out to the most natural of flushes, or you can build it up to create a stronger, brighter look - it layers really well on top of itself and lasts well on the skin without breaking up or fading.

M-&-S-rosie-for-autograph-eye-cheek-palette-2016-review-swatches-barely-there-beauty-blog

I've got to say I love the palette. I'd say the face portion is just as good as the Estee Lauder Golden Goddess palette (full review here) I raved about, and the shadows are a wonderfully wearable mix of shades - I'm giving it a huge thumbs up!

RIMMEL THE ONLY ONE MATTE LIPSTICKSREVIEW, SWATCHES + TRY ON.

rimmel-the-only-one-matte-lipstick-review-barely-there-beauty-blog-flatlay

I'm really choosy with lipsticks - I'm desperately fussy with how things feel on my lips and I can't abide a bad formula, meaning I definitely lean towards high end lip products. The only drugstore lipsticks I've deemed worthwhile so far are the Essence Long Lasting lipsticks and Rimmel's The One One, and today we're playing with Rimmel's new launch - the matte counterpart to The Only One range, with nine shades to choose from. I've got all of them to swatch and try on for you so let's see if they stand up to the test!

rimmel-the-only-one-matte-lipstick-review-barely-there-beauty-blog

rimmel-the-only-one-matte-lipstick-red-nude-pink-burgundy-purple-review-swatches

These claim to be an all-in-one, no compromise lipstick - a velvet-matte finish with all day staying power, moisture, comfort and a punch of colour. Right off the bat, the packaging is somewhat uninspiring - red, plastic tubes (they sound like wooden pegs, jostling around together) that just don't give me the same buzz as high end packaging does, although I appreciate that these cost a mere £7, whilst say Tom Ford will set you back £38. I was initially disappointed to see that the bullet has no pointed tip, and that the lipsticks are cylinders that have been spliced off at an angle, but actually I thoroughly enjoy the shape of the cross section - the nice, sharp edge makes getting around the cupids bow really easy, and you don't need to use liner if you don't want to. There's one thing I most definitely dislike about these lipsticks and that's the smell. It's a really odd, chemically raspberry scent with a minty flourish that makes me feel a bit queasy. Fortunately it dissapates once on the lips to the point I don't notice it anymore but swatching my arm up for the photos below consequently wasn't the most pleasant experience..

rimmel-the-only-one-matte-lipstick-red-nude-pink-burgundy-purple-review

rimmel-matte-the-only-one-lipstick-review-take-the-stand-matte-factor-trendsetter

Onto colours (that's what we're all really interested in right?) - all 9 shades swatch beautifully, super smooth, opaque and pigmented, but on the lips, I found there to be some discrepancy in formula between the shades. Over half worked really well for me - creamy, smooth, even, just as the swatches, long lasting, velvet-matte and non drying. The remainder are a little wetter and more patchy, and not quite hitting the mark. Let's start with the good..

rimmel-matte-the-only-one-lipstick-review-swatches

700 Trendsetter - A pigmented, midtoned nude. There's a mixture of brown, peach and rosy pink undertones to this one and I actually find it extremely flattering as it's almost identical to my natural lip colour. Great for those looking for a nude that won't wash them out.

750 Look Who's Talking - A chocolate-y reddened brown (pretty much identical to Essie's Chocolate Cakes nail polish). This shade isn't quite as dry in formula as some of the best shades, meaning it comes off more sheen-y, although the colour is still nice and even in pigment, and still lasts as long on the lips. It's on the cusp of being great in terms of formula but I love the colour.

610 High Flyer - A mid to deep rosy pink that still has a little brightness. I find this a really complexion lifting colour, it's supremely flattering in tone and shade and really does something for my skin, especially when paired with some blush. Another one with fantastically smooth and even pigment.

500 Take The Stage - A true red. Neither cool, nor warm toned, this classic red shade arguably has the best formula of the bunch. Super smooth, even, pigmented and creamy, it's not drying nor piece-y in texture, it's a top notch matte lipstick, this shade definitely rivals high end equivalents.

810 The Matte Factor - A deep berry shade, this one is gorgeous. It's not too dark and vampy, still retaining some brightness to the colour. Definitely a winner for fall/autumn, and the formula is great - - although I had a little trouble trying to get this shade to stick to the inner part of my lips.

120 Call The Shots - A bright yet flattering pink with warm undertones and a corally pop. This isn't a colour I tend to reach for but the formula is among the good ones.

And now onto the few I wasn't so keen on..

rimmel-matte-the-only-one-lipstick-review-swatches-try-on

110 Leader Of The Pink - A bright, 'Barbie' pink. I probably found this to be the worst shade for me. I find the colour too opaque for a pink like this and it was really patchy on my lips - compare it to Take The Stage and the difference is obvious. It didn't want to layer over itself, so overall, a big miss from me!

200 Salute - A pinkish nude. Somewhere in between Trendsetter and Leader Of The Pink, I found that this one applied pretty patchy, even though it's not too far in shade from Trendsetter, the formula was a lot more difficult to work with.

800 Run The Show - A vibrant, violet purple (these kind of colours don't suit me at all!). This immediately reminds me of MAC Violetta, I'd be interested to get them side by side for a comparison. Purple's seem to be notoriously difficult formulas to perfect and although this swatches beautifully on my hand/arm, it's a little patchy on the lips. The try on below was with the same slapdash application as all of the other shades (no lipbrush, no liner, straight from the bullet - because I'm never going to fuss with those things IRL) but this one doesn't want to apply as smoothly on top of itself so a little more effort is required. I've since tried it with a lip brush and it's much better, I also find it works better if your lips are completely dry.

autumn-2016-giveaway-beauty-makeup-rosie-for-autograph

I fairly recently hit 2K on my Instagram and what with my recent birthday too, I feel in the mood for giving. For today's post I just want to say a huge thank you for the love and support I get here and on my Insta - some of the kinds of comments I get are really overwhelming and completely make my day, especially about my photography, it's something I really love doing and it's amazing to hear you love it too. To show my appreciation, I'm giving away a few of my current favourite things - including this stunner of a palette that I've been wearing non stop.

I reviewed this in full recently (which you can check out here), and think it's just the most divine palette. 6 eyeshadows, plus a bronzer, highlight and blush, all of the shades are gorgeous, wearable and great quality. I know Rosie For Autograph makeup isn't easily available outside of the UK so I wanted to give the opportunity for those of you elsewhere to get your hands on it!

Although the palette is the focus, I wanted to throw in a few other goodies, in the form of...

These two bottles of wonder are my favourite from the Cosrx line - I've talked about how incredible I find the AHA BHA Toner in this post with Before & After's. It really helps with acne, scarring and pigmentation whilst being the most gentle of formulas, I'm completely in love. The serum has an excellent formula, predominantly made of the same stuff as SKII's Facial Treatment Essence, and bolstered with niacinamide, Vitamin B5 and adenosine. It hydrates, brightens and contributes to anti aging, is suitable for all skin types and is one of my powerhouse favourites.

Reddened brown shades and nudey pinks have been my utter favourites during this autumn and the tone of Chocolate Cakes is just perfection. Blush Melba is a pretty springlike peachy, pastel pink - I adore the formula of the Autograph Argan polishes, they're probably the smoothest polishes I've ever tried.

I reviewed these in this post and fell in love with the liners - they really compete with Stila and Tom Ford, aka my all time, unchallenged favourites. I actually received two packages from Rimmel so, as I love the liners so much, am throwing the second bunch into this giveaway - you'll be receiving the two liquid liners and two mascaras.

I'm sure it's no surprise to you, if you keep up with my skincare posts, that I love Cosrx. Their cleansers, moisturisers, masks, toners and serums I've tried are no fuss and high quality, gentle yet effective, with minimal fillers and unnecessary ingredients (I'm also giving away some Cosrx bits in my Giveaway which you can enter here!). Amazingly enough, I hadn't tried both their BHA Blackhead Power Liquid or AHA Whitehead Power Liquid until Buttermilk Skincare kindly provided me with the opportunity, and I hate to spoil the suspense but I feel completely compelled to write about them - they're fabulous!

Those of us with combo to oily skins know the struggle when it comes to pores - keeping them clean so that they look smaller and less noticeable, and don't cause us problems when it comes to blackheads and spots. Whilst you can improve the visible situation with blurring primers or powders, a BHA or beta-hydroxy acid liquid is the best way to help get to the heart of the issue - have a peek at my bumper post on Korean Skincare Tips For Acne & Acne Scarring for more on how I deal with it all.

The Cosrx Blackhead Power Liquid comes in the super sturdy, thick plastic packaging as the rest of the range, with pump dispenser - I like that everything is so simple. The liquid inside has a thin, glossy consistency, like a very viscous serum, or a refiner/softener if you're more au fait with asian skincare terminology (have a look at my Kbeauty Definitions post for more on this!). There's an ever so slight chemically scent that dissapates almost immediately, and it sinks in quickly to the skin, becoming dry to the touch within minutes.

barely-there-beauty-cosrx-blackhead-bha-power-liquid-review

Ingredients

Willow Bark Water, Butylene Glycol, Betaine Salicylate, Niacinamide, 1-2-Hexanediol, Arginine, Panthenol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Xanthan Gum, Ethyl Hexanediol.

What I really want to talk about is the formula. BHA's are oil-soluble chemical exfoliants that are really great at cutting through sebum to clear out pores, and prevent oxidised sebum from turning into blackheads. Their effectiveness is dependent on a) the concentration of BHA's present and b) the pH level of the formula/your skin. The Cosrx contains 4% Betaine Salicylate, enough to be effective without irritating the skin, as well as Willow Bark water, a naturally occuring BHA that isn't effective enough on it's own but works in tandem with the betaine salicylate, as well as lowering pH and acting as an anti-inflammatory. Using willow bark instead of water (meaning this is a water-free formula) lowers the pH of the serum to 4 - ideal as actives like AHA's and BHA's perform best between pH 3-5.

BHA liquids are stereotypically harsh on the skin and can be incredibly drying, nigh on irritating, which can be a problem as you're supposed to wait around 20 minutes before applying the rest of your routine, so that the acids aren't compromised too soon. I've found that due to the inclusion of anti-inflammatories as well as hydrators, such as vitamin B5 and sodium hyaluronate, my skin doesn't feel dry, nor irritated, and I actually find this formula really gentle on my somewhat sensitive skin. The instructions (in English!) recommend that you do not combine the use of this serum/liquid with other exfoliating or vitamin C or A products, so I like to use mine in the mornings, saving my retinoid/rosehip products for the evenings, although I do cheat and use the AHA liquid below as this is real life.. I've only been using this for a couple of weeks but can already see beneficial results on my nose in particular - I've got the kind of pores/blackheads on my nose that literally nothing seems to budge. I'm going to give it a little longer and then I'll be sure to share some before and after photos with you - quite possibly on my Instagram so catch up with me there for updates!

barely-there-beauty-cosrx-aha-whitehead-power-liquid-review

C O S R X   A H A   7   W H I T E H E A D   P O W E R   L I Q U I D

Now that we've targeted pores etc, there's the rest to take care of. Alpha Hydroxy Acids are water-soluble chemical exfoliants, dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells, and allowing faster skin regeneration and cell turnover. This really is the key to helping with fine lines, rough skin texture, acne, even those stubborn, stupid hormonal blemishes that seem to be the bane of my life right now.

The Cosrx AHA 7 Whitehead Power Liquid - 7 standing for 7% Glycolic Acid, comes in an identical bottle to the BHA liquid - more simple yet functional packaging indicative of the contents. Another very thin liquid (this time thinner than the BHA and really quite close to water), on first impressions this one feels a little more hydrating than the BHA, sinking in readily but leaving a slight plumpness to the surface of the skin. I've read in the past about there being an unpleasant smell to this, but I wonder if Cosrx have now addressed this, as I can gleam a slight chemically scent but it's very faint.

Ingredients

Apple Fruit Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycolic Acid, Water, Niacinamide, Sodium Hydroxide, 1,2-Hexanediol, Panthenol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Xanthan Gum, Ethyl Hexanediol.

cosrx-aha-bha-blackhead-whitehead-power-liquid-review-barely-there-beauty

Again, pH level is critical here, and Wishtrend/Fiddy Snails show a pH of 4 - strong enough to be effective without causing irritation or chemically burning the skin . My skin seems sensitive to strong acids (and I generally prefer lactic over glycolic), but I've experienced no redness or irritation with this formula whatsoever - it seems like all of the Cosrx products are suited to more sensitive skins, and I love that I don't have to worry about products being too harsh. This is another liquid that provides maximum results being closest to freshly cleansed skin as possible, and being given around 20 minutes to work undiluted. This is an instant gratification product - my skin felt softer and smoother after the very first application (if you've tried the brightening Blithe Splashing Mask - full review here - then you'll know the feeling, it's very similar). With continued use, that feeling is maintained, and that's something I love, it's amazing to wake up to skin that's so baby-bottom smooth every morning - again I'll update you re. longer term results when I've used the product a bit longer.

barely-there-beauty-flatlay-monochrome-korean-skincare-cosrx

I wholeheartedly recommend this clear skin duo if you're normal-oily (I actually think the AHA would work if you're a little bit dry, as long as you compensate with hydrators and moisturisers) and looking for a skin overhaul - I can already tell these are going to become a mainstay in my skincare routine. You can pick them up below from UK K-Skincare retailer, Buttermilk Skincare.

YURI PIBU ARTICHOKE SERUM + 5 WAYS TO HYDRATE YOUR SKIN THIS WINTER.

$

I think keeping your skin hydrated is really underrated. It's arguably one of the very most important things you can do for your skin - for overall skin health, to prevent premature aging and blemishes, and to alleviate acne, eczema and other skin conditions. Today we're talking about super-skin-hydrator, the Yuri Pibu Artichoke Essence ($38), available here at Glow Recipe (go check out their brilliantly curated selection) as well as 5 tips I use to hydrate my skin in the colder weather.

Y U R I   P I B U   A R T I C H O K E   P O W E R   E S S E N C E

This water-free serum claims to soothe and hydrate skin with 10 natural moisturising factors (NMF's) , whilst tightening pores, to leave you with baby smooth skin that feels fresh and hydrated. It comes in a frosted glass bottle - a blogger's aesthetic dream - with pipette. With it's bouncy, voluminous texture and opacity, this essence initially feels much more like a gel cream but has a great slip that ensures it smoothes over the skin with ease.

Ingredients

Artichoke Leaf Extract (60%), Witch Hazel Water, Glycerin, Coco-caprylate, Silica, Eclipta Prostra Extract, Sunflower Seed Oil, Zanthoxlylum Piperitum Fruit Extract, Pulsatilla Koreana Extract, Lichen Extract, Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, Beuthero Root Extract, Cathamus Tinctorius (Safflower Seed) Oil, Rose Flower Oil, Lavender Oil, Tea Tree Leaf Oil, Ceramide 3, Sodium Hyaluronate, Phytosphingosine, Yeast Polysaccharides, Cholesterol, Lecithin, Squalene, Glucoyl Ceramide, Keratin Amino Acids, Shea Butter, Tocopherol, Adenosine, Xanthan Gum, Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Sclerotium Gum

As you can see from the ingredients list, this is a water free formula - which I always enjoy as you're getting a little more bang for your buck instead of a formula that's been filled out or diluted by water. What I love about this serum is how much good, and how little bad, they've included - hydrators, humectants, fermented ingredients, linoleic and palmitic acid containing oils, sugars, amino acids, vitamins, ceramides (my fave) - the vast majority of this essence is made up of skin-benefitting ingredients. Artichoke also is known to firm skin and is a rich source of antioxidants, providing moisture and protection against free radicals.

There are a few negatives I want to discuss so let's do a compliment sandwich and tuck them in now. Firstly, the packaging is difficult to work with. The pipette doesn't allow you to reach all of the product, especially when you're on the last quarter, and the fairly wide bottle vs thin bottle neck means it's hard to get in there with a spatula etc to get every last drop - inevitably you're going to waste some, which I deeply disapprove of. I also seemed to get through this really quickly - it lasted me only around 2 months and I don't think I was overgenerous or liberal with my application. Lastly, the supposed pore tightening effect left me a little wanting. It certainly excelled in other areas, but I have other products that provide a much better result when it comes to pores.

More on those results. From the very first application you can see a difference. I was highly impressed with the level of hydration this incredibly lightweight serum (bear with me as I use serum and essence interchangeably here - you can see my Kbeauty Definitions post for more on the lingo) gave - even though it set to a demi-matte finish on the skin, I still woke up the next morning feeling amply hydrated. Obviously YMMV but I think you'd be hard pushed for a better layering/hydrator serum if you have acne-prone or sensitive skin like mine currently is (check out more on how I deal with it all in my Korean Skincare Tips For Acne and Scarring) - the formula comes out with flying colours after a run through Cosdna.

Although not strictly an oil-free serum, I feel this would be a fantastic product for those with combo-oily skins. For drier to normal skins I'd recommend using this as a layering item, especially during the winter. Speaking of which, let's move on to my 5 tips for keeping your skin hydrated during winter.

H Y D R A T E   I N S I D E   O U T

Really this comes down to drinking more water and eating monounsaturated fats, fatty acids, omega 3's and oleic acid, that prevent dehydration lines. Whilst you can apply products topically, you want to make sure you're hydrated and moisturised on the inside too - yadayadayada you know all of this right? Just remember that non-essentials like skin and hair are last in the queue for water and nutrients so make sure you stock up.

U S E   A   G E N T L E   C L E A N S E R

I know how obvious this one must sound too, but it's the cornerstone of any good hydrating routine. Using a sulphate or harsh cleanser (like those often marketed for acne) can upset the natural balances in your skin's acid mantle, creating a layer of dead skin cell buildup that can trap oil and bacteria, whilst making your skin feel dry and tight. I generally only cleanse my skin with water in the mornings, and with an oil followed by micellar water like the REN Rose Cleansing Water (big fave) in the evenings.

H A V E   Y O U R   T O N E R   R E A D Y

Especially if you've washed your face with warm water, the surface of your skin is going to be warm, creating evaporation of moisture into the atmosphere - which we obviously do not want. To help mitigate this, have an alcohol-free spray toner, skin refiner or facial mist handy to spray your face within a minute after cleansing. I like the Cosrx AHA BHA Treatment Toner or the Trilogy Hydrating Mist. Tip within a tip - making your own facial mist from a skin softener/refiner (like this IOPE one) works really well for this, as the ever so slightly thicker viscosity helps to seal in more moisture.

W O R K   I N   T H I N   L A Y E R S

To get the most out of your skincare routine, layer your products from lightest to heaviest, and give the necessary items time to work before applying the next. As an example - I might start off with my Cosrx AHA BHA Treatment Toner to reduce the pH of my skin, before applying my Cosrx AHA Power Liquid (full review here) as it's extremely thin and almost water-like. This needs 20 minutes to 'cure', before I ruin the low-pH environment with my next product. I might then apply my hydrator - the Yuri Pibu essence as it's slightly thicker and has excellent ingredients. To cap everything, I like to finish things off with a facial oil, either retinol orientated like Sunday Riley's Luna (we had a shaky start to our relationship but I actually really enjoy it now) or something like rosehip oil. The key here - I find very thin layers of multiple products work better to hydrate my skin than one generous layer of a single product.

A P P L Y   O I L   B E F O R E   S H E E T   M A S K S

If you haven't tried the Blossom Jeju two-part sheet masks then you definitely need to experience them - you can read my full review and demo here. And if they're a little out of your budget then you can still gain the benefits by applying oil before your favourite sheet mask. Some formulas work better than others, I tend to find a light, viscous oil and milky essence work really well together - eg I really like a generous amount of rosehip or camellia oil, followed straight away by Etude House Snail Therapy Air Mask.

Pick up the Yuri Pibu Artichoke Essence here from Glow Recipe, and a big thank you to Sarah and Christine providing this sample for review! Let me know your favourite hydrators in the comments below beauties!

10 THINGS TO DO FOR YOURSELF.

makeup-flatlay-photography-barely-there-beauty-blog-luxe-rose-gold-pink-lifestyle

If there's something I've learnt over the last several years it's that it's not only OK to be fully selfish sometimes, but that it's behaviour to be encouraged! I think it's all too easy to people please, or to put others before yourself all the time - god knows I do it a lot - but you matter too. So today I'm sharing 10 things you should do for yourself, and encourage a little self love!

makeup-flatlay-photography-barely-there-beauty-blog-luxe-rose-gold-pink

R I D   Y O U R S E L F   O F   T O X I C   P E O P L E

Let's start with one of the most important tips. I've no idea why but I used to think I had to put up with people I didn't like, maybe that I felt I had to make them like me, or that I should make an effort with people that aren't bringing me any positivity. I used to think that the people that made me feel envious, small or insecure (Instagram anyone?!) had to remain in my life, or that I still had to talk to the friend whose conversation had just devolved into competition and oneupmanship. If you're in that mindset, I'm here to tell you that that's just simply not the case. And it's not about whether it makes you a nice or mean person - it's just you doing you. You deserve better than the negativity and toxicity and belittling, and it's within your control to not accept it. Distancing yourself might be the best thing you've done this year.

S A Y   Y E S   M O R E

Anyone else abide by the 'You're more likely to regret the things you didn't do, rather than those you did' mantra? Being open to change and getting out of your comfort zone actually does a lot for anxiety - something that I, along with many, suffer from. The more you enrich your life with new experiences and opportunities, the happier you become, and the only way to do that is by saying yes more, instead of talking yourself out of it, or putting things off until you feel more confident/it's after your birthday/it's next year/you're thinner.

B E   H O N E S T   W I T H   Y O U R S E L F

Whatever version of you you want to portray to the rest of the world (and I understand putting on a front etc to make you feel better), behind closed doors, be honest with yourself. Even if things aren't good - and god only knows honesty is hardest to hear when things aren't - at least you have a grasp on where you are and you're in a position to assess the situation and make changes.

E M B R A C E   Y O U R   I D I O S Y N C R A S I E S

Whilst realising you don't always conform to the norm can have you feeling disappointed and not good enough, standing out isn't always a bad thing. Everyone but everyone has their quirks so what does that make normal anyway? (Isn't it funny how being called 'normal' is generally seen positively, whilst most of us would feel somewhat underwhelmed being labelled 'average', even though they mean very similar things.) Embracing who you are can bring you joy, so focus on being the best version of you rather than a second rate version of someone else.

G E T   O U T S I D E   M O R E

The sedentary, technology-driven lifestyle a lot of us live these days robs us of many of the simple things that bring us pleasure and peace of mind. Research has found for example that exposure to sunlight alleviates depression - no surprise, as I'm well aware that sunshine always lifts my spirits! Just getting out for a walk in the country can get your blood pumping, endorphins going, top up your vitamin D levels, mitigate stress and generally do your body and sense of well-being the world of good.

10-things-to-do-for-yourself-self-love-care-confidence

D O N ' T   B E   S O   H A R D   O N   Y O U R S E L F

Believe it or not, I've been diagnosed with 'Perfectionism', which I always thought was a positive thing and just meant striving for the best rather than being an ailment (I think people use the phrase 'I'm such a perfectionist' incredibly lightly and most have no idea) - it still frankly sounds like nonsense to me and isn't something I've ever told anyone outside of my inner circle - so I guess now you know! But setting constant and all-encompassing standards for yourself that are impossible to reach and beating yourself up when you don't reach them is pretty soul destroying. This is something I'm still working on, so I could do with practising what I preach here - and if you want me to talk about my experiences and tips more then let me know.

D E C L U T T E R   Y O U R   S P A C E

A tidy space for a tidy mind - who doesn't feel better after a clean up and a clear out? I recently cleared out all the skincare and makeup packaging I'd accumulated for months (why do we keep these bloggers?!) and went through my entire makeup collection, chucking out the old and expired, and it felt so good. Even the little things like sorting out your diary or deleting unwanted pics or apps on your phone can do the trick.

F O R G I V E   O T H E R S

And not for their benefit either. I love this Chinese proverb: 'Holding onto anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else, you are the one who gets burned'. I'm not saying to invite them back into your life with open arms by all means (refer to tip 1!), but holding a grudge expends your own energy that could be put to better use.

I N V E S T   I N   A   G O O D   B R A

Your tatas aren't supported by muscle, but rather by skin and ligaments (who thought up this terrible design shortfall??) and aside from defying gravity for longer, a good, well-fitting bra can help with headaches, neck and back aches, posture and the fit of clothing, especially if you're amply proportioned. I love Wacoal's Halo bra as it offers full cup support and you can clip together the straps at the back to stop them slipping down your shoulders.

W E A R   A   H I G H   S P F   E V E R Y   S I N G L E   D A Y

Wearing a high factor sunscreen everyday is one of the best things you can do for your looks. The sun, as much as we love it, is arguably the biggest cause of aging in skin, and the UVA rays that we can't see are able to penetrate clouds and glass. There are SPF's available in all types of formula now so there's no excuse! Try a powder like this Pang Pang SPF powder or the cult Biore gel for oily skins, the Myeonghan Miindo for drier skin, or my personal favourites, the O Hui Perfect Red and cushion SPF's. And make sure you get a dedicated sunscreen as makeup including SPF isn't enough.

LONGER, STRONGER HAIR IN A BOTTLE?

grow-gorgeous-hair-serum-strengthening-oil-review-blog

A good skin and hair day is a surefire way to make me feel better about myself, and I'm sure I speak for most all of us! Grow Gorgeous, a Deciem brand, focus on giving us products that promote hair growth and health aswell as making it look shiny and lustrous - everything I've wanted since my tussles with Telogen Effluvium. Today I'm talking about their Hair Growth Serum and new Strengthening Oil, available here at Grow Gorgeous, and at Boots, Look Fantastic and Amazon - so read on for my thoughts!

S T R E N G T H E N I N G   O I L

Whilst I've tried a lot of oils, some specially formulated for hair, and others not, I haven't yet found one that I'm entirely happy with. Most neat oils like olive oil or avocado are a little too heavy for my fine strands, weighing down my natural waves, and leave the ends of my hair feeling a little grubby or oily. Others (coconut oil) have scents that I find too overwhelming for constant use, don't contain enough of the active ingredients (Moroccan Oil), or are so 'dry' that they do nothing for my hair - finding the balance is a struggle!

Formulated with a multitude of oils, mostly Amazonian Sacha Inchi and chia, the Strengthening Oil is designed to revive dry and brittle hair that's been impaired by sun or pollution damage, brushing and enviromental aggravators, whilst remaining lightweight. High levels of omega 3, antioxidants and vitamins nourish the hair fibres and provide a film around them to reduce protein loss.

Ingredients

Hexamethyldisiloxane, Polydiethylsiloxane, Dimethicone, Salvia Hispanica Seed Oil, Plukenetia Volubilis Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Phenyl Trimethicone, Parfum (Fragrance), Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Bertholletia Excelsa Seed Oil, Pongamia pinnata (Karanja) Seed Oil, Beta Vulgaris (Beet) Root Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Fruit Extract, Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil, Amaranthus Caudatus Seed Extract, Rosemarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Hippophae Rhamnoides Oil, Squalane, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Dimethiconol, Diisostearyl Malate, Ethylhexyl Stearate, Tocopherol, Cinnamyl Alcohol, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Linalool, Limonene, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde.

Whilst perhaps going into my trials with some reservations, I'm happily surprised with how much I like this oil - it's really lightweight and thinned out. The bottle initially looks small but just a few drops is all you need, depending on the length and thickness of your locks, to add some shine. I apply around 5 drops which spread easily over my palms so that I can distribute the oily easily on the lengths and ends of dry hair. And I'm not a believer in oils that suggest you use them after blow drying - anyone can add shine to the hair by forcing the cuticle flat with heat. This oil gives me shine and lustre on air dried hair (the photo above is air-dried hair and for me, it looking like that without heat is pretty excellent!), making it feel and look a lot smoother and sleeker, and is lightweight enough to use daily on my fine strands. I'm thoroughly impressed, and I definitely recommend using a wooden pin brush like this one to distribute the oil evenly through your hair - I adore mine.

In short, this serum is designed to increase not only the length of your hair, but how many hairs you have on your head. In terms of explanation of the product, Grow Gorgeous go into a nice level of detail on the technicalities and timescales - which I think is really useful, because they are questions we as prospective users are bound to ask:

'Made with a 21.5% active complex that combines seven different technologies, the hair density serum contains an 8% Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3 and Clover Flower Extract Active Complex which works within eight days to improve visible hair length, whilst increasing hair density by 13% over the course of four months.

Infused with hyaluronic acid to moisturise your scalp, it also contains an 8% Bio-Active Pea Sprout Complex and a 5% Bio-Active Complex of Chinese Skullcap, Soy Sprout and Wheat Sprout, helping to activate and diligently improve hair density.'

Ingredients

Aqua (Water), Pentylene Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Propanediol, Arginine, Lactic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, Dextran, Glycine Soja Germ Extract, Triticum Vulgare Germ Extract, Daucus Carota Sativa Extract, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3, Trifolium Pratense Flower Extract, Gluconolactone, Pisum Sativum Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Caramel, Sodium Benzoate, Calcium Gluconate, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Parfum (Fragrance), PPG-26-Buteth-26, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Linalool, Limonene¸ Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde.

I've been using this for a few weeks now, albeit not quite every day as the instructions suggest - I covet freshly washed Day 1 hair and like to keep it product free and swishy at least for a day. I take 15 drops and give myself a good scalp massage with it - the serum is really lightweight and although it initially feels like my roots are going to get greasy, it sinks in pretty well, especially overnight which is why I apply it in the evenings. I'm not entirely sure what 'improving visible hair length' is - is my hair supposed to look longer but not be longer? I can't say I've yet noticed a difference in my hair length that's above and beyond it's normal growth but I have noticed that I get a lot less fallout. It was only about a week in that I realised - less hair in the shower, less hair in my hair brushes, less hair sticking to the carpets and being a bitch to hoover out.

Overall, I'm giving the oil a big thumbs up and am excited to keep using the serum - I'll probably do an update once I've used up the bottle. A big thank you to Grow Gorgeous for allowing me to try these pieces.

Have you tried either of these? I'd love to hear your experiences!

THE AUTUMN EYE EDIT

$

I haven't done a single-makeup-collective post since my Favourite Neutral Fall Lippies here, and as well as loving reading these kinds of roundup posts on other blogs, I do love an excuse to get stuck into making a more-is-more flatlay! I've got a bumper crop of autumn-appropriate eyewear for you today so grab a blanket and get comfortable (snacks advised).

A few things I wanted to mention - Firstly, I haven't included too many palettes as I'm particularly fussy about them (as well as the usual criteria, I need to like every colour, am fussy about packaging and size, don't like cardboard, don't like bulky, and most importantly don't like small pans that contain very little product and are difficult to use) and generally prefer single shadows. Secondly, I often talk about expensive things on my blog, so I've made an effort to keep everything below £30, and hopefully have some products you may not have previously considered.

Charlotte Tilbury Eyes To Mesmerize in Marie Antoinette £22 | Described as an 'antique oyster gold', I think this colour is sensational. I only picked it up fairly recently but it's already become a mainstay in any simple but put-together look for me. With a mix of cooler beige-gold tones and a warm pinkish-copper undertone, it's flattering for everyone and a shadow you can't go wrong with.

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Sparkle in Sunlit Bronze £21 | Aside from the colour, I love the versatility of this product. The more you sheer it out and blend, the more the warm, amber sparkle comes to the fore. If you're pushed for time on an evening, you can blend this all over the lid, then reapply with a liner brush close to the lashline to add richness and definition.

Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon in Dark Pearl£19 | You'll notice there's a fair amount of Charlotte Tilbury in this post and for good reason - not only are her formulations excellent, but I love the complexity of her eye colours. Dark Pearl is a dark taupe-y mauve with brown/plum undertones and a glint of rose gold/pale pink shimmers in the light. This one isn't as glittery as some of the other shades in the range and is completely effortless and steadfast to wear - definitely a must for autumn.

Rosie For Autograph Palette £25 | I can't help myself but include this gorgeous palette in this post - and you can win it, along with some other goodies, here in my Autumn Beauty Giveaway! The mulberry shade, Velvet Rose, in particular is gorgeous - have a look on my Insta at it on my eyes.

No7 Smoothing Eyeshadow in Pewter Shine £8 | More cream shadow, and this one is the most gorgeous colour - somewhere between a soft metallic grey and taupe, with a soft, souffle-like texture. It's not as budgeproof as some of the best formulations but I've found it best tapped over a powder shadow base using your fingers - the colour is such a winner.

Charlotte Tilbury The Huntress £29 | When I first bought this almost a year ago, I have to say I wasn't keen on the colour, but the olivine tones and dark smokeyness has definitely grown on me since then. I find this is one of those unusual, non-dupeable shades and perfect for a more unique smokey eye, and whilst it's not the easiest to pick up online, you can still get it at CT Covent Garden.

Coastal Scents eyeshadow in Rich Walnut $3 | Here is the ultimate bargain of the lot and I bet you many haven't tried it. A beautiful mix of burgundy, brown and plum, the colour is deep and rich, pigmented and smooth and is definitely worth more than it's minimal price tag.

Laura Mercier Caviar Eye Stick in Rose Gold & Amethyst £23 | If you're looking for high end cream shadow sticks, you can't go far wrong with Laura Mercier. Their Caviar Eye Sticks are long-wearing and creamy, and fully reliable. My favourite shades are Amethyst, a cool toned mauve-y taupe with plummy undertones, and Rose Gold, a bright, champagne-peach kind of rose gold.

MUA Luxe Palette in Enrapture£6 | It's a joy to find this Hourglass knockoff is a mere £6. The Enrapture palette (the darker of two available shades), has a beautiful mix of muted purpley shades - another great one for a smokey eye. The formula on these are pigmented and incredibly soft and buttery, they're almost mouldable like putty and possibly a teeny bit too soft for an embossed palette like this - you've got to appreciate the gorgeous waves on it though.

Kiko Long Lasting Stick Shadow in 37 Burgundy and 06 Golden Brown £6.90 | If you're after an affordable cream shadow stick then I think these by Kiko are as good as they come. As long lasting as the name might suggest, they don't budge once on the lids and give intense, opaque pigmentation, which you can sheer out should you so wish. Burgundy is a beautiful plummy wine colour that works really well over a black base.

Kiko Water Shadows£8.90 | For their drugstore pricing, these shadows are smooth, buttery, super pigmented and as metallic as you'd wish. You can use them wet or dry, and they foil really well - shade 213 Dark Slate Green isn't my usual choice but an incredibly pretty blackened green with green, golden and teal shimmer that's well worth checking out!

M&S Strobing Eye Tint in Rose £8 | The packaging of these have since changed but my thoughts on the contents are still the same. A gorgeous, iridescent wash of colour, the Rose shade is coppery and warm and looks particularly delicious on green or hazel eyes.
